The source is at sw1 and 2 wire cable runs from there to the fixtures. The threaded socket is the neutral.
Light Switch Wiring Electrical 101
Wiring a light switch with neutral. Of courseand look for a neutral white. The most common requirement of any hardwired automated light switch is a neutral wire. When i remove the face plate the neutral wire is wired to the light switch on its own. When someone decides to use the wall switch to shut the light off the power to the bulb is cut which means it will stop being a smart bulb until you turn the switch back on. The black hot wires are what get connected to the light switch. This diagram illustrates wiring for one switch to control 2 or more lights.
Multiple light wiring diagram. The white neutral wire from the power source and the white neutral wire that goes to the light fixture get connected to each other. Its not connected to the other neutral wires that fit in the multiple light switch housing. You could also ask the electrician to rewire both the switch and light fixture but this is more complex and therefore costlier. So when the switch is off all hot parts of the lamp are well protected. If you put the loop over the screw in the counterclockwise direction tightening the screw will force the loop open and could create a loose connection.
And when the switch is on only the tab at the bottom of the socket is hot but if the wiring is reversed and the power goes to the threaded socket the threaded socket is always hot whether the switch is on or off. There are a couple smart switches that work without a neutral. For those of us using led fluorescent or some other energy efficient bulbs under 20w a neutral is required. Wrapping the wire clockwise when wiring a light switch ensures that the loop on the end of the wire will tend to close when the screw is tightened. Here is a diagram of a standard switch with a neutral wire. Again excuse my paint covered hands.
The light i want to use it on is a single onoff switch not a 3 way switch. 1 run a neutral wire. Im having trouble installing a wemo wall switch. I paint a little and then work on electrical. The hot and neutral terminals on each fixture are spliced with a pigtail to the circuit wires which then continue on to the next light. Buy a smart switch that works without a neutral.
The switch still breaks the circuit but in this case the smart switch can tap into the neutral wire to keep power flowing through the switch the electronics in the switch still break the circuit to the light but the switch maintains a circuit so it is always receiving power. Yes there are a fewread very very very few switches that dont require a neutral but those will limit you to incandescent only. Wiring a light switch is very simple. Call in an electrician and get him to run a neutral wire running from the light fixture to the switch.
